Eating Disorders, Body Image and Cultural Contexts Although a great deal of early research on body image and eating disorders focused on upper/middle class Caucasians living in America or under the influence of Western ideals, many researchers are realizing that eating disorders are not isolated to this particular group. They are also realizing the differences in body image between occur in different races and genders (Pate, Pumariega, Hester 1992). Recently, several studies have shown that eating disorders transcend these specific guidelines, and increasingly, researchers are looking at male/female differences, cross-cultural variation and variation within cultures as well. It is impossible to broach the concept of body image without†¦show more content†¦They found that black women overall prefer a more voluptuous and robust body shape; the women seem to correlate this with wealth, stature and fitness across cultures (Ofuso, Lafreniere, Senn, 1998). Another study that looked at how women view their bodies supports these fin dings. This study shows how perceptions of body image vary between African American and Caucasian women. African American women tended to be happier with themselves and have a higher self esteem. The women were all college women from two small community colleges in Connecticut; this is very important that their surroundings are essentially the same (Molloy, Herzberger, 1998). Although these studies reveal that African American and Black women across the world have different cultural constraints and body image ideals than other ethnic groups, other studies urge researchers not to forget that Black women are not unsusceptible to eating disorders and low self esteem. One literature review cautions that the dominant culture of a society may impose its views on individuals and cause a deterioration or change in values and perceptions (Williamson, 1998). Interestingly, Black women with high self-esteem and more positive body images also possess more masculine traits than other women studi ed. The Most Important Summer of My Life Essay This summer was a different one altogether. It was a once of a lifetime experience for me to be exposed to the big world. This summer, I attended math tutor, went to Fiji to get my visa, and traveled to Korea for a math conference. There was so much to do during the summer break, but the main thing is that I enjoyed and learned a lot of new things, especially from the trip to Korea. All the excitement and fun came when it was getting close to the date when I left for Fiji. I was really excited about meeting up with my family members especially my grandpa. After I returned from Fiji, my main focus and excitement was towards the trip of a lifetime; a conference trip to Korea. This was going to be my first time travelling to Hawaii and Korea. Surely, this trip was a memorable one not only because I have been to places Ive never been before, but also the life lessons I picked up on this trip. I learned to do laundry, manage my allowances, and most importantly, taking care of myself in a really big world. During the first part of summer, I attended math classes with Mrs. Park and consistently went to the gym. There wasnt much going on at this time of my summer vacation, aside from preparations for the trip to Fiji to get my U. S Visa done. It was at the end of June where excitement came into place. It was the moment Ive been waiting for because there was nothing else to look forward to in the beginning of the month of June. Aside from math tutor, going to the gym was the other part of my summer program in the beginning of the month. I was always looking forward to go to Korea every time I hear Mrs. Park discussing about the conference. So basically, the first part of my summer was boring and full of excitement at the same time. I was glad when August came around because it meant that one more week and Im off to Fiji. The whole first week of August, my mind was already on vacation. Sometimes, I would be sitting in my room, and just dream about all the things I would do in Fiji. I was really excited to go back home because I really wanted to see my family members and close friends. My trip to Fiji was initially planned for one week but due to unavailable slots for interviews that week, I had to stay for another week. During the trip, my Mom and I were able to fit other things we planned to do while we there. We managed to get an interview slot at the U. S Embassy which was the main reason why My mom and I were there. On the day of my interview, we were informed that the machine that was used to print the visas had some technical difficulties so the Embassy was not able to print any visas at that time. The good thing going was that my visa was approved and all was left was it to be printed. Aside from the main purpose of this trip, I was able to spend time with my Moms side of the family because usually, when we go a family trip back home, we always spend time with my Dads family. I made use of the opportunity I had and spent most of my time with my Moms family. This trip not only was to get my visa done but it was a time to build a stronger relationship with my Moms family. Everyone knows that all good things always come to an end. It was a really sad moment when I bid my family farewell. All that was going through my mind at the time, was of the provision that Our Father in heaven had bestowed upon us and given us the opportunity to have a stronger bond with my family members. But all the excitement didnt end there. I still had another trip to look forward to. On that week, I had to get all my traveling documents prepared and all my clothes sort out to pack. It wasnt that much of a hassle, but boy was it stressful. On the day before our departure, I was informed that there were two tropical cyclones headed for Hawaii. At that moment, all I had in mind and hoped for was that the cyclone will turn around or pass Hawaii. Gladly, I was informed that the cyclone had passed and the flights are not cancelled. From that moment, my mysterious adventure to the big world had begun. There were six of us who were involved in this trip. Four of us were students, our math teacher, and my classmates parent as a chaperone. Three of us came from here and met up with my classmate in Hawaii who was at Arizona for vacation. The two other people took the lead to Korea and waited for us there. We spent one day in Hawaii and headed on our way to Korea. Upon our arrival, we were so captivated and amazed at the sight of buildings and the advancement in technology. Talking about advancements in technology, there was wireless WiFi available everywhere we went. From a person coming from an island with a population of sixty thousand, Korea was a really big leap. What really captured my attention was how people would be walking on the streets with their phones in front of their faces. To me, it was new because here in Samoa, we barely see anybody walking around and their attention is on the phone. We might think that its crazy to do such thing, but it was absolutely normal in Korea. The main purpose of our trip was to attend two math conferences. One was the ICM Conference and the second one was Bridges 2014. The ICM Conference was mainly for mathematicians and math professors but we sat in lectures from Fields Medalists recipients. It was a great experience to hear about how these mathematicians struggled to achieve their goals. It was inspiring yet challenging to hear people who started from scratch, came from broken homes, but managed to receive the Fields Medal. The second conference however, was a much livelier and a much interactive conference. We also attended lectures and attended a ming session that was all about math. The Bridges had an art gallery that was painted by mathematicians who make art pieces that relate to math somehow.

Music Influence On Society Music has been around for thousands of years. Music appeals to everyone. When was the last time you have heard someone say, "I hate all music."? Lately though music has been criticized for corrupting teen's minds. Rap is being blamed for all the crimes and murders in cities all over America and heavy metal is being blamed for giving teens only dark images and thoughts in their minds. Although the media and public criticize rap and rock music and blame the music for influencing teens negatively, they actually give many teenagers an outlet from their life problems. Parents love to blame musicians like and Dr. Dee to bands like KoRn and Limp Bizkit for their child's problems. Music is an excuse for bad parenting. "One should look at the family background of the person committing the crimes" (Foster 3). Most criminals come from dysfunctional families, which would explain why a person would turn to crime in life. Another reason a person would turn to crime is being sexually abused as a young child. This would definitely cause a person to go a little crazy. When someone hears some lyrics from Eminem, they do not go out and do what he says. Lyrics from Eminem and other similar lyrics are for entertainment only. If people did whatever they heard, then everybody would be evil and corrupted I hear far worse words and phrases during school than on a rap album, and the words do not effect me or anybody else otherwise everybody in school would run around shooting people and doing drugs. Rappers are blamed constantly for crimes. In 1988, rapper Ice-T was under the gun from the media because of a song he wrote called, "Cop Killa". Once that song was released several police murderers said they did it because of Ice-T's song. "But is it Ice-T's fault fore these crimes, or is it the fault of the person committing these crimes against the police" (Foster 2). Foster asks an interesting question. The answer is no, the musician should not be the one blamed for these crimes. Police officers were being shot all the time before that song. All cops know that their jobs are dangerous, yet they still take the job. Also a group called Three Six Mafia had a similar experience to Ice-T's. They were banned from almost every state in the north and the south because of a song they wrote called "Tear the Club Up". Whenever the group performed this song, a riot broke out. This is not the groups fault though. The people who cannot control themselves are the ones to be blamed. The media was quick to jump out and say that the riots were a direct result of the so called "Gansta Rap", not the result of the out of control people in the crowd. Rap music is a rapidly growing type of music. It has gotten many poverty stricken people out of the ghetto. Also, rap musicians donate thousands and thousands of dollars to charities all over America When do you hear the media give them credit for that? The media always looks for the worse in all stories. Rap also gives many young people hope in life. When a teenager has problems in life, music can always help them feel better. Rap musicians rap about their life. So if a person complains about the rap lyrics, then they could make a difference by fixing up poverty stricken communities. Once a rapper makes a second album, it is usually less graphic because they know a different life. They will rap about being rich and coming from some of the worst communities in America Fatherhood is another subject for rappers as they mature into a better life. Rap lyrics do not influence bad behavior, but reflect it. Rock is another type of music that is critize d often by the media. They say that rock bands like KoRn and Limp Bizkit give kids negative thoughts and make teens act out in violence. This however is not true. The only way rock influences teenagers is on what they wear. Kids that wear baggy pants, large shirts, and long necklaces with five inch pendants usually listen to rap. Teens that wear wide leg pants and torn up clothes usually listen to alternative. Lastly, teenagers who have pierced tongues, blue hair, and wear tight leather pants most likely will listen too rock. Because rock influences teens on what to wear, that does not mean that the kids will
